The first trade union organization of the Azerbaijan Railway was created at the beginning of the twentieth century, on October 7, 1905, at a conference of workers and employees of the Transcaucasian, Vladikavkaz and Central Asian railways in Baku.

After the formation of the USSR, the trade union organization of railway workers operated as part of the Transcaucasian Railway Trade Union Organization. After the creation of the independent Azerbaijan Railway on October 13, 1955, the trade union of railway workers of Azerbaijan continued its activities independently. Since 2001 - Republican Committee of the Independent Trade Union of Railway Workers of Azerbaijan.

By the beginning of 2021, 6 MKHIRK of Azerbaijani railway workers, numbering about 19 thousand members, covers the united and 83 trade union committees of enterprises and organizations. In the Nabran zone of the Union there is a recreation center "Lokomativ."
