The Azerbaijan Free Trade Union of Education Employees was established on June 9, 1920 as the successor of the Azerbaijan Cultural and Educational Employess Trade Union. Until then, several teachers' unions in Azerbaijan operated spontaneously and limited their activities only to the demand for an increase in their salaries. In subsequent years, the Azerbaijan Cultural and Educational Workers Trade Union was called the Education, Higher School, Scientific Administration Workers Trade Union (MAMEIIHI), the Public Education and Science Workers Trade Union (XTEIHI), and since 1990, the Azerbaijan Free Trade Union of Education Workers (ATIAHI).
The main goal of the union is to ensure the protection of labor, social, economic rights and legal interests of state and private institutions, organizations, employees, students, and postgraduates of higher, secondary specialized and vocational education, and general secondary education institutions operating in the education system of our country.
The Azerbaijan Free Trade Union of Education Workers unites around itself about 390 thousand members, more than 5800 first trade union organizations.
The supreme body of the Azerbaijan Free Trade Union of Education Workers is the Congress convened every 5 years. In the period between congresses, the supreme body is the Assembly, which is held at least once a year. In the period between assemblies, the executive body is the Presidium, which is convened at least once a quarter.
The Republican Committee of the Azerbaijan Free Trade Union of Education Workers has the right to conduct collective negotiations for the preparation, conclusion and amendment of collective agreements and contracts.
Within the framework of international cooperation, the Union establishes bilateral relations with relevant trade union organizations of some countries for the purpose of exchange of experience and information, and is also a full member of a number of international trade unions. ATIAHI has been a member of the International Union of Trade Unions of Science and Education Workers based in Moscow, Russian Federation since 1992, the International Union of Education Workers based in Brussels, Republic of Belgium since 2000, and the Eurasian Union of Trade Unions of Education Workers based in Ankara, Republic of Turkey since 2006.
