An event on the occasion of May 28 – Republic Day was held at the Azerbaijan Trade Union Confederation (ATUC) on May 26.

Opening the event, ATUC Chairman, MP Sattar Mohbaliyev spoke about the history of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic, the factors determining its independence and the political situation at that time.

The chairman said that the first democratic republic in the Muslim world was established in Azerbaijan: “103 years ago, this was a great historical event and was possible due to the talent, hard work and foresight of our people. Significant work has been done during the two years of activity of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic. Important steps have been taken to build the state, the army has been created, and women have been given the right to vote for the first time. In short, a solid foundation has been laid for the future successful development of Azerbaijan.

S.Mohbaliyev noted that the path taken by the Republic was a democratic path, and all its work was based on these principles: “The Republic has a parliament, government, army, customs and law enforcement agencies, national symbols and state attributes, civil rights and freedoms. it was a democratic republic above all else. At the beginning of the 20th century, a democratic, secular, unitary state based on civil solidarity was established in Azerbaijan for the first time in the East, where the monarchy and military-feudal regimes ruled. ”

Mohbaliyev said that the historical experience gained during the Republican period, the democracy he founded, the building of a democratic state are being successfully implemented and developed in his legal and spiritual successor, the Republic of Azerbaijan.

“The preservation and development of independence in Azerbaijan is connected with the name of national leader Heydar Aliyev. Looking at the invaluable services of our national leader during his presidency in 1969-1982, it is clear that Azerbaijan is one of the leaders in the former Soviet Union in terms of economic development, strengthening the rule of law and building strategically important industrial and manufacturing enterprises. has taken far-sighted and wise steps that laid the foundation for our independence. It is the purposeful policy of the great leader since the early 70s of the last century to protect the national and spiritual values ​​of our people, to study our history in the right direction, to increase the role of our mother tongue, to protect literary and artistic samples from attacks. ATUC chairman said.

The chairman of the confederation said that great leader Heydar Aliyev formed the socio-economic bases, infrastructure and national human resources necessary for the future independence of Azerbaijan: “Thousands of young Azerbaijanis in the 70s and later on the initiative of Heydar Aliyev to train specialists needed for the country. They were sent to study at prestigious universities in various cities of the former USSR.

Recalling the period of the national leader’s leadership in Nakhchivan, the chairman added that this period challenged the national leader to lead the national liberation struggle of the native people: “During the difficult period of the Karabakh war, he united the people of Nakhchivan around the Armenian occupation of this ancient land of Azerbaijan. prevented. The adoption of the tricolor flag, an attribute of national statehood, as a state symbol of the Republic of Azerbaijan under the chairmanship of the great leader in the Nakhchivan parliament is one of the most glorious events in the history of our independence.

He said that after national leader Heydar Aliyev came to power in 1993 at the insistence of the people, chaotic processes were prevented in our country, social and political stability was ensured: “Establishment of statehood ideas in Azerbaijani society became fundamental. The new political course, which began to take shape in the country in June 1993, eliminated the threat of civil war, put an end to separatist tendencies and led to the realization of the state-building policy of the great leader Heydar Aliyev. Most importantly, after the ceasefire was achieved on the frontline on May 18, 1994, the necessary steps were taken to strengthen the statehood, build a regular army, as well as ensure dynamic development in all spheres of life. As a result of the consistent and systematic measures taken, peace and stability have been established in the country, stability has been established, and privatization has been given ample space in connection with the transition to a free market economy. On September 20, 1994, oil contracts were signed, which was a turning point in the recent history of Azerbaijan. “This agreement, called the ‘Contract of the Century’, has laid a solid foundation for the future development and security of our country, and has strengthened Azerbaijan’s position on the world map.”
