Today marks the 4th anniversary of the liberation of the city of Aghdam, which was under Armenian occupation for 27 years.
Starting in 2023, November 20 is celebrated in Azerbaijan as the Day of the city of Aghdam. The establishment of this significant day is connected with the liberation of the city of Aghdam from occupation by the armed forces of Armenia. As a result of the brilliant victory won by Azerbaijan in the Patriotic War, Aghdam was liberated from the enemy onslaught without a single shot being fired.
On September 27, 2020, the Azerbaijani army launched a large-scale counteroffensive operation in order to put an end to the enemy’s provocation and occupation by Armenia. During the military operations, the occupied lands were liberated by the armed forces of Azerbaijan for many years. Each liberated village strengthened the fighting spirit in the country, further strengthened the faith in victory.
The successive victories of the Azerbaijani army alarmed the enemy. The Armenian military tried to save their lives by running away from the battlefield. Most of the occupied lands of Azerbaijan were liberated as a result of 44 days of fighting.
Since Aghdam was completely mined by the enemy and the strongest fortifications were installed here, the Azerbaijani army did not conduct large-scale military operations in this direction, using successful military tactics. But as a result of successful operations conducted by the Azerbaijani Armed Forces in other areas of the front, the enemy forces in Aghdam fell into a state of semi-vertigo. This caused great panic inside Armenia and among the military and political leadership of that country.
Realizing the impossibility of resisting the strength and might of the Azerbaijani army, the military and political leadership of Armenia was forced to sign an act of surrender. Thus, in accordance with the trilateral declaration signed on November 10, 2020, the Aghdam region was returned to Azerbaijan on November 20. Thus, the city of Aghdam, occupied for 27 years, was completely liberated from the invaders, on the same day the units of the Azerbaijani Army entered Aghdam and raised our flag there.
As in other regions liberated from occupation, large-scale construction works are underway in the Aghdam district. The victorious Supreme Commander-in-Chief, Mr. Ilham Aliyev, has repeatedly visited Aghdam, was closely interested in the large-scale construction works being carried out, and laid the foundation for new settlements.
Every year, the Azerbaijani people celebrate with great pride November 20 – the Day of the city of Aghdam.
