Sahib Mammadov, Chairman of Azerbaijan Trade Union Confederation (AHİK), met with Luc Triangle, General Secretary of the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC), who is visiting Baku to participate in the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29).
During the meeting, the participants talked about the activities of Azerbaijan Trade Unions Confederation, including their international relations, the course of COP29, and discussed the upcoming tasks.
Chairman of Azerbaijan Trade Union Confederation Sahib Mammadov said that COP29, hosted by Azerbaijan with high professionalism, is being held in a transparent, impartial and inclusive manner. He brought to the attention of the guest that the results of COP29 will lead to a reduction in environmental impacts, high results in the fight against climate change, and broad public participation.
According to him, under the leadership of Mr. President Ilham Aliyev, all manifestations of democracy have been fully established in our country, and human rights and freedoms, including labor rights, are ensured at the highest level. It was noted that as a direct result of the complex measures implemented by our state, the welfare of Azerbaijani citizens is constantly increasing, and the amounts of salaries, benefits and other social payments are regularly increased. Naturally, this leads to the strengthening of Azerbaijani trade unions, their free and independent activity, and more effective protection of labor rights.
The Confederation Chairman also spoke about the steps taken to create safe and decent working conditions in Azerbaijan, noting the care shown by trade unions for the health of employees and the conditions created for their recreation.
It was also emphasized that the organization considers international cooperation as a priority in its activities, conducts work in the direction of studying and applying the world’s progressive practices in the field of labor rights. Speaking about the benefits of cooperation with ITUC in this regard, Sahib Mammadov informed the secretary general that they intend to take appropriate steps towards further expansion of relations and establish closer contacts.
Luc Triangle, General Secretary of the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) expressed his satisfaction with being in Azerbaijan and participating in COP29. He noted that COP29 was organized at a high level and its results will be very useful in combating the consequences of climate change.
He also touched upon the event on the theme “Strategic Day for Trade Unions”, jointly organized by the ITUC and the AHIK within the framework of COP29, and stated that the discussions held there and the shared successful experiences will be the basis for trade unions’ activities related to a just transition.
The guest, who noted that he was closely acquainted with the activities of the Azerbaijan Trade Unions Confederation, expressed interest in further developing cooperation.
The meeting also included a broad exchange of views on other areas of interest to the parties, and discussed the tasks ahead.
